Thank you for looking at our
website!
When
we looked at what was already out there in the fused glass world (and there
really is some absolutely beautiful work out there), we felt that the market
was already flooded with bowls and coasters etc.
As we both like to challenge ourselves and
think “outside the box” a bit more, we began to develop our own style over
time. This was also partly as a result
of being asked to make commissions in a particular style or of a particular
subject.
We especially enjoy doing pieces with animals on and just when we think we have covered every animal we can think of, someone will always come up with something obscure for us to make! We seem to have gained a reputation for quirky animal art!
The fused glass process on the
face of it is quite simple. The kiln is just basically a very big very hot oven
which heats the glass to such a high temperature that it “fuses” together.
In reality of course it is a lot more than
that and there is a lot of science involved, with many trials and errors along
the way. This all adds to the fun and as
they say “every day is a school day” as we continue to learn and develop our
skills.
We purchase large sheets of
coloured glass and each individual piece of glass is cut by hand using a small
hand tool (we get through a lot of plasters!).
It is then assembled in the kiln as needed and fired for approximately
18 hours up to a temperature of about 900 degrees C.
We mount many of our pieces on
natural wood that we pick up in the Forest whilst we are out walking. The wood is all dried, then treated so that
it can happily sit outside or inside.
Each piece of wood is unique and usually lends itself to a certain
animal or flower.
